Termite Control Methods That Actually Work

Termite control is an issue that many homeowners wish they had tackled sooner than later

. These insects are considered pests because they feed on plant material which commonly comes in the form of wood, dead leaves, animal dung and some plants and trees. In spite of playing as big role as they do in recycling, they tend to be so energetic in their pursuit for food that they invade houses and other structures made of wood. They also attack books and other materials derived from plants and trees, even if some of these are treated with chemicals. They have a caste system in which there are workers, soldiers and other members of their society. They have a single queen that produces eggs for the sole purpose of populating the colony.

Do It Yourself Methods

There are a few methods available to homeowners for termite control. A few of these are available in do-it-yourself stores as baits. Once these insects are found in or near a home, it is a good idea to immediately start the process of annihilating them. They multiply fairly quickly, and can be unnoticed for several months before their presence is noticed by the occupants of the house or structure. Baits are implemented by drilling holes in strategic places around the house or structure that needs to be managed. The holes are filled with a cylindrical container that has several pieces of wood inside them. These pieces are bait for the insect to eat when it passes by the containers. The wood is filled with or immersed in an insecticide that is highly effective in killing off those that have come in contact with the pieces.

Another method of termite control is the prevention and management of the entire property even before the structure has been built. Pieces of wood and dead plant materials should be cleared from the area in order to discourage the presence of the termites. The soil, particularly in the place where the structure is supposed to be, and its surroundings are treated with an insecticide that should last for several years. This insecticide will eliminate any of the insects that come around for the duration of time. There is a need to reapply the insecticide after the allotted time has elapsed.

Professionals' Methods

Professionals usually have similar methods of controlling and managing populations of these insects. The difference is that they usually have stronger insecticides, labeled "for professional use only," and "handle with care." These chemicals may be dangerous when people are exposed to them, which is why it is important that people who know how to handle them are the ones to use them. Termite control by professionals involves locating the insects' nest, spraying them directly with insecticide, and doing follow up visits to make sure that they are gone from the vicinity. They also use the baiting system with similar methods as those sold in stores.
