Test Route Overhaul

The UK is looking at a major overhaul in the driving test

, the Daily telegraph has revealed this week. Learner drivers will now be asked to navigate themselves to local landmarks without the help of the test instructor, in a massive change from the tests that youngsters currently see, with people taking strict instructions from their examiners. People taking their tests will not be able to view the route online beforehand or use sat nav, but simply know the route.

The road safety minister intends to make the driving test much more true to life than it currently is, to make new drivers more aware of how their daily drive will be, and impact greatly on the safety of current road users. The changes reflect the thought that currently, learners are being taught how to pass their driving test, rather than taught skills that can apply to their lives as drivers and Car Insurance customers.

The government believe that by publishing test routes, drivers are learning the routes, and it is hard for the examiners to actually see whether the new drivers are competent, or whether they are simply repeating a routine they have learnt.

The overhaul was welcomed by Peter Rodger, the chief examiner of the Institute of Advanced Motorists.

"Making the test more true to life is a definite step forward the more realistic the examination process the better. All new drivers have to learn that multi tasking controlling the car, looking out for hazards and planning ahead while navigating is an integral part of day-to-day driving.

"Driving instructors will no doubt learn the routes over time, and use them when teaching, but there is at least some reflection of reality in that most of us drive familiar routes most of the time."
