Testing And Treatment At A Hearing Center
You drive by the hearing center every day on your way to work
. You know that it's a good idea to screen your hearing, but how often? Besides, you feel as though you hear just fine. What about your children, or your mother?
Everyone should have a yearly physical. Part of that physical would be a hearing test. If your family physician finds that you're not hearing within normal ranges, he or she may refer you for further testing. If you are over 60 or you work in a noisy environment, your employer may even pay for more frequent hearing exams. If you have a child, they will of course be tested at birth. A pediatrician generally tests children again at around three or four years old. This test could be as simple as seeing if your child turns toward sound. Children also receive a hearing screen during the kindergarten screening. So what happens when the screening doesn't find you are hearing within normal ranges?
The next step is to see an audiologist at a nearby hearing center. The audiologist specializes in preventing hearing loss, identifying and assessing hearing problems, and helping patients with balance problems. You would likely receive a test to help determine your level of hearing. Audiogram testing is done by having the patient sit in a sound-proofed room. The patient then wears earphones. The test itself entails the patient signaling when he or she hears a tone and out of which ear they hear it.
Tympanometry is another test available. This test doesn't require the patient to detect any tones. This test is performed by putting a probe in the patient's ear. This test can tell if there is any damage to the patient's middle ear by changing the pressure. If there is any damage to the ear or evidence of hearing loss, your audiologist can help you find the treatment that is right for you.
One treatment may be surgery. If you are suffering from a conductive hearing loss, it could be earwax buildup or maybe even fluid. This could be treated medically, and you might be back to hearing life crisply and clearly again in no time. If you are suffering a sensorineural loss, this means your damage cannot be repaired. It could even be that you have a genetic predisposition to hearing loss. If what you need is to amplify sound, then you may need a hearing aid.
No matter what you find out about your hearing, a local hearing center can assist you. If you need guidance choosing a hearing aid that's right for your level of hearing loss, they can do that. If you need help finding one that fits your budget, there are hearing aids for every budget. Hearing the world clearly is only a treatment away.
