Tetracycline Treatment For Acne Is More Than A Cure
Try to imagine going through your teenage years feeling extremely uncomfortable about your physical appearance
. For many teenagers, severe acne can be a devastating experience that robs them of their self confidence and leaves them with feelings of low self esteem. This can lead to much larger psychological problems such as depression and substance abuse which can negatively affect them for the rest of their lives. Before nineteen fifty these teens had very little help available to combat this condition. However, these days there are medicines like Tetracycline available for acne treatment, and all a person needs to do now is go to a pharmacy and buy antibiotics to cure this condition.
Tetracycline, a broad spectrum antibiotic can be a life saver for many young people afflicted with severe acne conditions.
With all the advances that have been made in the world of science and medicine over the past few centuries there are still a few mysteries that confound doctors and scientists. One of them is the actual cause of severe acne. Basically, they know what happens when pimples are formed in large numbers, but they do not quite understand the why part of it. The good news is that several of these scientists invented an antibiotic called Tetracycline, and it is a very effective treatment for acne.
The antibiotic known as Tetracycline was first discovered in the natural form by a man named Benjamin Minge Duggar in nineteen forty eight. In nineteen fifty the first synthetic form was created by a Harvard Professor named Robert Woodward and a research team of scientists that included L.H Conover, a scientist who is often credited as the inventor of Tetracycline, among other antibiotics.
Tetracycline is known as a protein synthesis inhibitor. Basically, it binds itself to certain harmful bacteria and inhibits the amino acids from forming which prevents the bacteria from reproducing.
Acne bumps, or pimples are formed when malfunctions occur in pilobaceous units in the skin. These are units that are in almost every part of the skin of the body except for places like the palms of the hands, soles of the feet and lower lip. They consist of a follicle of hair, a tiny gland called the sebaceous gland and a hair that varies in size depending on its location on the body.
The sebaceous gland in the pilobaceous unit provides the body with a natural skin and hair moisturizer. The purpose of this gland is to produce an oil called sebum that fills the unit and flows out onto the skin, thus keeping the skin from drying out.
Unfortunately, there is a bacteria that is common on human skin called Propionibacterium acnes, and it loves to feed upon sebum. This process inflames the pilobaceous unit which in turn sends the white blood cells of the body to the area to fight these bacteria. A battle ensues on a microscopic level and there is damage that occurs to the unit when this happens. This inflames the skin around it, causing the red bumps that are commonly called pimples.
For unknown reasons, people with severe acne conditions have much higher levels of Propionibacterium acnes than people who have normal, healthy, acne free skin. A severe acne condition occurs when the amount of Propionibacterium on the skin of a person is so high the white blood cells cannot seem to win the battle. But they continue to fight nonetheless. With such a large amount of bacteria present, the white blood cells work overtime causing many red bumps to appear on the surface of the severe acne sufferers skin.
These bumps can appear in massive amounts on the face, neck, shoulders, arms, chest and back areas with victims of severe acne. The white blood cells are just trying to do their job and fight the bacteria, but they are way outnumbered. Unfortunately, there is a lot of damage to the skin during this extended battle. Without the proper acne treatment, severe cases can persist for years, can be very painful and can cause great damage to the skin of the affected areas.
The worse part about improperly treated severe acne is the psychological damage it causes. A young teenager afflicted with this condition must deal with the embarrassment and ridicule associated with a face or body covered in pimples. Then they must deal with the issue of having scarred and pock marked skin after the condition eventually clears up.
Acne can be devastating to a young teenager who is already struggling with changes that are occurring in their bodies caused by growth spurts and new hormonal production. These changes can alter their physical appearance in undesirable ways and make them feel very self conscious. Add to that the pressures of fitting in at school, and then a case of severe acne hits you and it is not hard to understand how devastating it can be to a psychologically vulnerable young person.
If the proper acne treatment is not received, many young sufferers of severe acne can find it hard to endure. They become severely depressed and withdrawn. They tend to miss a lot of school to avoid the ridicule, the stares, and the ostracizing that occurs in the cruel world of teenagers. These depressed teens often find refuge in drugs and alcohol to ease their pain. Once a young person gets on this path it usually leads to abuse and addiction, which only makes their problems worse. It can even destroy their lives.
Prior to the invention of antibiotics such as Tetracycline there was no medical treatment for acne available. Teenagers just had to endure the hardships of severe acne. If they were strong enough mentally, they made it to adulthood, but with a scarred face and body.
Nowadays a person just has to go to the pharmacy and buy antibiotics, thanks to advances in modern medicines. Tetracycline treatment for acne is common in severe cases and it has proven to be very effective. This broad spectrum antibiotic works very well with the white blood cells of the body to form an alliance against bacteria. The Tetracycline inhibits the growth of the Propionibacterium enough to let the white blood cells get the upper hand and win the microscopic battle.
An antibiotic can be a powerful tool in the war on harmful bacteria. Tetracycline treatment for acne is recommended by doctors for anyone who is battling severe acne. A trip to the pharmacy to buy antibiotics, and within weeks they can have acne free skin. If Tetracycline treatment for acne is received early enough, the scarring to the skin is minimal and the psychological damage is manageable.
The invention of antibiotics like Tetracycline have given hope and relief to many young people who are afflicted with cases of severe acne. Sometimes, an antibiotic can be more than just a medicine or an acne treatment, it can be a lifesaver too.
