Texting And Sleep Deprivation

Texting has taken over the world

Texting has taken over the world. This global take over has created the ability for people to stay connected and share information at a moment's notice.

This ability has enhanced business efficiency, family scheduling, and friendships. However, it has also presented some challenges for teenagers that are detrimental.

Studies and surveys have shown that teenagers stay up through the night texting their girlfriend or boyfriend. The ability to text has added to the struggle teenagers have with sleep deprivation already.

When parents crack down on a teen's late-night computer messaging to their friends, they will simply turn to their phones to stay in contact with their friends. This makes it very difficult for parents to know how much sleep their child is really getting.

As cell phones gain more and more abilities, programs, and applications, they are tempting teens to stay up even later into the night.

While the changes in the bodies of teens do allow them to stay up later and still function, the change is not that much. Doctors are also becoming concerned because cell phones generally tend to give more energy to teens to stay up later, instead of encouraging tiredness like TV and internet surfing.

This is partly due to the obligation to finish a conversation with a friend once it is started. When caught texting some teens try to get out trouble by saying they barely woke up and decided to text their friend.

Some parents buy this story, but most doctors agree after evaluating numerous studies that there is sufficient ground for parents to assume they have actually been up the entire time. Another appeal of texting is the excitement of doing something they are not supposed to be doing.

In addition, these continuous texts can really add onto the phone bill throughout the month for parents or teens. This can be a huge financial burden and cause other family problems.

Some teens complain that night texting is the only time they are able to catch up on the day's activities with their friends because of school, extra-curricular activities, jobs, and homework. However, doctors believe that the cost in sleep is too big to be ignored.

They encourage parents to be conscious of their teen's texting and general cell phone usage. It is also important to remember that how a teen uses the cell phone is as important as how often and when it is used.

Instant messaging is also becoming very popular and is a growing service within the cell phone plan providers. Some providers have started providing short messaging services, or SMS, for an additional fee of five to ten cents per message.

A small taste of how many text messages are sent is shown by Verizon Wireless' records of supporting over 17.7 billion text messages between October and December. This number is more than twice the number that were sent in 2005.

It is almost mind numbing to think that this is the number from just one phone service company. There are several ways parents can keep track of how much their teens are using their cell phones.

The number one suggestion from doctors is to develop the habit of making sure the phones are turn off and placed somewhere out of the bedrooms a full half an hour before bedtime. It is much easier for teens to stop texting and get some sleep if they cannot hear their phone reminding them that new messages and news are arriving every so often.

In order to avoid conflict, some parents simply require the phone be put on the charger in a room that is not the bedroom. However, other parents simply review the phone bill every month and seen when their teen has been text messaging.

Parents can also use their child's cell phone to call the company and find out the number of texts sent from that specific phone. If what they find is concerning, the parent can then block text messaging or other services until the teen shows some responsibility.

There is no extra fee for setting extra block like this. Some parents simply talk with the parents of the child's friends and they work together on setting and enforcing restrictions.

Some parents continually save their child from consequences of texting, such as being late to school because they slept in with a note. Doctors believe that this has to stop in order for the child to realize why texting late at night is not working for them.

Texting has become an extension of the body. Eating habits, sleeping habits, and exercise habits have to be developed over time within reasonable bounds.

Self control regarding texting is also a vital part of staying healthy and functioning normally.
