Thank you: The Art of Post Interview Follow-up!

- As a part of post interview follow up, yes, a personalized thank you notes for each interviewer is a must.

- A telephonic interview? Yes please, you need to send out a thank you note here as well.

It might be a bit tedious, but the outcome is worth the effort. Before I elaborate on how to write a good thank you note, let me give you a little more insight about its importance:

1. Shows your interest in the organization.

2. Demonstrates that you have manners and you understand and follow basic business practices.

3. Another reason to remind the employer if you have not heard from him for long.

4. Can be hard copy or emailed. Mailed version is better because it is faster and shows your spontaneity.

Now a few pointers on what are the important areas that must be leveraged while drafting your thank you letter/mail:

I. Address the letter to the interviewer by name: If you donot know their names, try to find out from the reception before leaving. A personalized thank- you follow up will go a long way in affecting the hiring manager's final decision.

II.Thank your interviewer: Get to the point and thank the interviewer for giving you the opportunity and time. Tell them how eager you are to join the organization. Do mention the post you applied for. Mentioning intricate details gives a positive impression.

III. Mention a particular instance in specific that you found impressive: An example of this can be: "your interest in football is very impressive" or "your recommendation about improving the employee interaction within the organization is worth an applause." Appreciate and mention the highlights of the interview.

IV. Discuss how you can contribute to the betterment of the organization.

V. This is not a place to rant about your skills. A cover letter and resume has already done that for you.

VI. Last but not the least, mention any additional information (eg. contact details) you would like to share with the employer.

Remember to send this mail between 24 48 hrs of the interview. A quick followup from your end will create a good impression. Here the trick is not to sell yourself but to create an image that portrays you as an ethical and professional individual to work with. A good ending always makes an ever-lasting impression.
