Thanksgiving Day Gifts From A Son In Distance
When a busy day draws to an end and dusk descends
, I would lean over the railings of terrace, glazing at the shimmering family lamps in the distant darkness. What father and mother are doing now? It is a question I can't help to ask inwardly. Due to long time stay abroad for work's sake, I haven't been by the side of my family for a total four years. And a sense of melancholy and nostalgia would seize my heart at such moment. Yet memory warms me up. I still remember how four years ago I sat around the table with my family, eating roast turkey and expressing good wishes to each other on Thanksgiving Day.
Now the 2010 Thanksgiving Day is approaching, yet I can't come back. The only way I get in touch with my family is conducting video conversation through Skype with father and mother. And that moment is the happiest of mine. Hearing that I can't fly back for another Thanksgiving Day, I can discern regret and pity from their voices. But I am really reassured for knowing that they are in good health.
Besides, I have prepared surprises for them. My father likes to drink coffee because as a columnist for a newspaper, he has to stay up late to write things. So it didn't take me much time to think what to buy for him as
Thanksgiving gift. I bought him a large parcel of coffee beans which is original because the country I am staying now is a large coffee bean producer. Though coffee beans aren't something expensive, I bet he will be very glad when receiving my gift.
As to mother, the gift for her is a hard nut for me to crack. Mother is a traditional and almost ordinary woman. She never pays much attention to cosmetics or clothes that most women take great interest in. I guess it is mainly because she spent most of her time and energy on running the whole family. Now it is time for me to pay back. My choice is an electric massager. Years of toil has made the back of mother bowing and sagging. She never complained about pain in back, but I heard father saying that she can't fall asleep sometimes due to pain in back. I hope an electric massager will relieve her back pain.
How I wish my gifts will extend my warmth and affection to dear father and mother on the 2010 Thanksgiving Day. Meanwhile, I promise inwardly: I will keep their company the next Thanksgiving Day.
