The 10 Deadly Sins of Optimizing Your Website

The 10 Deadly Sins of Optimizing Your Website

Many of the articles you read tell you what to do to optimize your website, well that approach is now boring and saturated. I am going to cover the 10 deadly sins which I consider will not optimize your website and will affect all your optimizing you already did.

People that I talk to that are starting an online business look at building a website as quite an easy task. That is until I have time to educate them on the very important things needed to develop a website, a website that not only looks good but operates good.

Before we go into the 10 deadly sins of optimizing your website, I would like to build a knowledgeable foundation for everyone reading this.

Your website is probably primarily meant for marketing a product or a service, with this in mind you need to make it search engine friendly. There are a few ways to go about doing this which include consulting with a SEO consulting company or doing it yourself. I am one who likes to do thing myself which allows me to teach others, plus it saves me a bunch of money. Before you reach out to a consulting firm try filtering through my 10 deadly sins of optimizing your website. Just consider if my list can save you hundreds of dollars if not thousands, and then you can use that money on more advertising; or that summer vacation you have been thinking about. So without any further delay I provide to you 10 deadly sins of optimizing your website.

Don't link up with the wrong people (actually sites). If you get hooked up with other website that have been deemed as "spammy" or practice black hat options, this will be bad. Your site then has the high chance of being deemed as SPAM or blacklisted for unethical behaviors.

Don't exchange links with other sites or companies that have no relevance to your product or service. For example if you own a lawn mowing business you don't want links that go to a company that makes dog bones. This is a good way to lose a reader and relevance in the search engines mind. Search engines want to keep their readers happy and if you send them on a wild goose chase for information, the search engines know this. They have ways !!!!!

Don't drown your readers in keywords! In a few articles I have previously written I touch base on this. For your site and any posts you make, do not insert more than 4 of the keywords you want to rank for. Besides the search engines you need to consider your readers and future clients. Your keywords also need to flow in a fluent motion throughout your content, if you put in too many keywords you will be considered SPAMMY.

Keep your Title and Meta tags different or this will definitely hurt your optimization.

Quit trying to hide text! I have come across some website develops that take a phrase or a text, and make it the same color as the background. No matter what you put on your site, search engines can and will see it and score your site accordingly. Be very open and honest with people and your ranking will go up, try to hide things and they will find it, come on folks.. The people that write the algorithms are smarter than you and I; just play nice.

Don't use frames on your website. Frames on websites are very hard to index by the search engines, thus they leave and your indexing is poor. While there are millions of "spiders" that go over websites, if they cannot figure out the site, they move on without ever looking back.

Name the pictures! Whenever you load pictures up to your website, make sure you name your pictures. Make sure you name them with a relevant name. If you are making a post on your site about working from home, don't have the name of the picture jp.26558924. Due to compatibility issues and loading times I would recommend using images smaller than 250kb. For the fastest loading time a picture of 100-175kb is the best. Not naming your pictures lowers the optimization possibility, so just do it!

Don't duplicate your site content within the site. I see some bloggers or internet marketers use their blog in a way that constitutes duplicate content. Don't take a blog post or article and change a few words and expect good ranking. Like I said before the spiders are smarter than you think, many people use article "spinning" software, you run the chance of becoming slapped with a SPAM tag.. or what I like to call "Mr. Yuck"

Don't make a post and just throw it out on the World Wide Web. I can only strongly recommend double and triple checking your HTML code. Yes, it is pretty easy to fix a post or a site but just do it right the first time. Take the time to type out your content on Microsoft Word or another program like it and check for spelling and grammar concerns, then just copy and paste the final product. Do not take the shot gun approach with this, where you just shoot out content and hope it hits someone or something.

Don't forget about the speed of your site. If your speed is too sloooow you will definitely lose readers and clients. We all know how it feels to have a slow internet connectionit drives us crazy! No one even wants to wait 30 seconds for a page to load, so don't have anything on your site that slows down your speed. Trust me I learned this one the hard way.

Following not only what you need to do to optimize a site but also these 10 things not to do, will keep you in good standing.
