The 10 Steps To A Smooth Kitchen Revamp

So before starting to move items out, each of these 10 steps should be followed:

1. At least a week before the kitchen fitters are due, start packing away kitchen appliances and utensils. Liaise with the contractor to minimise the number of items to be moved immediately, and if possible, phase the job over a few days.

2. When packing items away, mark each box with details of its contents. Items needed for daily use, such as tea, coffee, sugar, microwave, tin opener, plates and utensils should be kept close to hand.

3. Create a kitchen area in another suitable room of the house, but make sure this has easy access to a sink for washing up. If the weather allows, a patio will be an easier area to keep clean.

4. Cook meals ahead of time and freeze them, then serve them with pre-prepared vegetables to save time.

5. If you have access to one, use the kitchen area of a caravan or camper itll make it more like being on holiday!

6. Disposable plates, cutlery and cups will save on washing up.

7. Buy pre-cooked meats and fish to save time. This will also substantially cut down on the washing up.

8. Do the same with vegetables. Its a chance to take a break from all that chopping and peeling, not to mention disposing of the remains!

9. When moving dishes and plates, keep together the ones which are likely to be needed in a strong, stackable box with a lid. That way, its easier to avoid disturbing any which arent immediately required.

10. If the floors are being replaced as part of a kitchen refit, it will be essential to remove all floor-standing furniture and equipment. But if not, the floor itself will need to be protected, from both workmens boots and unforeseen mishaps. Dust sheets or even just old pieces of carpet stuck down with strong tape will then be handy.

As your contractor will be occupying your home, give them advance notice of any house rules they would be expected to observe. Move everything of value, and leave a clear space for the crew to work in and move through without risking damage to any items not being moved. If these guidelines are observed, a new kitchen installation can be made much easier for everyone concerned, and is far more likely to be completed on schedule.
