Have you ever been in a store when the power went out? Things we take for granted are suddenly changedbar code scanners and cash registers don't work, transactions can't be made, and the automatic doors won't open to let you out. In this situation, it's an inconvenience. Imagine however, a breakdown in society that is a total, system-wide crash. How would this affect you? What would you do? And most importantly, what should you be doing right now to get yourself prepared for what's coming next?

Last time, we learned that the first step to survival is making sure you've pulled your head out of the sand, and started believing that the Greater Depression around the corner is real, inevitable and something you might not survive. Once you're on board with this concept, your next step is to start planning how to survive. In other wordsbeing prepared.

The goal is for you to become as self-sufficient as possible because, quite frankly, if things fall apart you won't survive otherwise. You need to be asking yourself a lot of what ifs:

* What if it costs you more to commute to work than you make at work?

* What if you lose your job, unemployment insurance runs out and you can't find work?

* What if the dollar suddenly becomes worthless?

* What if there are food shortages and riots?

* What if you can't afford health care?

The Wall Street Journal reported on October 13th, 2010 that the Federal Reserve is expected to again print more money to stimulate the economy, specifically in order to create more inflation! This is known as quantitative easing, or QE2, and you should be aware of how the Federal Reserve affects you and your dollars:

It's no longer good enough to say "It can't happen here." The evidence is overwhelming that not only can it happen here, but that it's increasingly likely to happen here, and soon. And when the faade begins to crack, it all falls apart quickly. If you're not prepared beforehand it will be too late to save yourself.

There seems to be a consensus that the metropolitan areas will be hit first and hit hardest. It makes sense then to think of the future, the time of the Greater Depression, as a camping trip.

Being prepared means having an exit strategy. In the corporate world, an exit strategy refers to cashing out on an investment. In the real world, the one we live in, an exit strategy is the means by which we plan to escape from a disastrous situationthe Greater Depression.
