The 2010 Chevy Corvette C6.R has Arrived With High Hopes and high Expectations
Racing seems to always come naturally to the Corvette. Ever since it first took to the track the Corvette has always found a way to dominate the completion eventually and that is thanks in large part to the engineering greats that have graced GM in the past and those who serve loyally today.
In its latest racing endeavor, the Corvette is warning those racing in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the 2010 American La Mans Racing Series (ALMS) to beware as there will be a new Corvette looming around and sniffing out the podium. GM has officially unveiled the all new second generation Corvette C6.R race car and this time they have based it heavily on the Corvette ZR1 which can be purchased by anyone with an extra $100,000 plus lying around.
The new version of the C6.R is powered by an all new 5.5 liter V-8 engine which is the first notable change from the first generation that shared much of its design with the Z06 including the 7.0 liter engine. However, because the ALMS changed the rules in the production based GT category a change had to be made to the racing Vette as well.
Many of the components of the next generation C6.R are taken right from the Corvette ZR1. The C6.R has the same body design in the basic since, has the same aero package as the King of the Hill, has the ZR1's aluminum underbody, affront splitter like the ZR1, and similar steering.
Additionally the racing Vette has flared out fenders so that it can accommodate the bigger Michelin racing tires and it sports a full rear spoiler. The brakes, tires, and wheels are obviously different from the Corvette ZR1 to accommodate racing conditions but the biggest difference is the 5.5 liter engine.
Where the typical Corvette ZR1 has a 6.2 liter engine that spits out well over 600 horsepower the rule change by the LMRS would not allow for such a big engine. Thus the 5.5 liter was born that puts out the allotted 485 horsepower. Actually the racing engine is closer to that of the Z06 rather than the ZR1 and uses the LS7 engine only with reduced cylinder boring and a shorter stroke to go with it.
Fueling the second generation Corvette C6.R will be E10 fuel for the 24 hour race and then it will be E85R ethanol fuel, which is specific to race cars, for the rest of the ALMS season. While all these changes are the first to come to the C6.R since it was introduced in 2005, the racing powers that be are extremely optimistic with the new version.
If history proves as any type of pre-cursor then the competition has much to fear. Time and time again the Corvette has proven itself a worthy adversary no matter what division or level of racing it sees competition in. Only time will tell if this newest edition to the Corvette racing family will prove its worth as well. One thing is certain, the racing world will be watching with baited breathe and high expectations.
