The 2010 Jeep Patriot has a 2.0 liter four cylinder engine

The Jeep Patriot is a compact SUV which has been sold and manufactured by the Chrysler corporation since 2007. Since Chrysler's acquisition by Fiat took place, Fiat has announced that the Patriot will be discontinued by 2012 to make room for a new Fiat produced compact SUV.

The 2010 Jeep Patriot comes with two engine options. The first engine option, which comes standard if two wheel drive is selected, is a 2.0 liter four cylinder engine. The four cylinder engine produces just 158 horsepower and is considered insufficient by most reviewers. The Patriot comes standard with a manual transmission, although it can be upgraded to an automatic transmission for about another $1,000.

The second engine option for the 2010 Jeep Patriot is a 2.4 liter four cylinder engine. This engine option costs a few thousand extra dollars, but doesn't seem to be worth the extra cost as the upgraded engine generates only 172 horsepower. Similar competing vehicles offer engines which produce over 250 horsepower.

A 2.4 liter diesel engine is available in Europe and Australia, but is not available in the US. The diesel engine decreases performance but can save substantially on fuel costs.

While engine power can be considered weak, the Patriot does get excellent fuel efficiency. The base engine with a manual transmission gets almost 30 miles per gallon on the highway and 23 miles per gallon in the city. If the Patriot is upgraded to the 2.4 liter engine, fuel efficiency does fall off somewhat. Overall, the Patriot's fuel efficiency outperforms comparable vehicles.

The engine options within the 2010 Jeep Patriot are the same as they were in the previous 3 model years. Since the Patriot is likely to be discontinued in the next two years, it is highly unlikely that a new engine will be produced.
