The Office for National Statistics (ONS) is an agency in the United Kingdom that
holds information on a vast array of different topics, including how many overseas people visit each of the major cities within the UK - and how long for - each year.
According to the 2008 figures that the ONS holds and that were published last year, the following list is made up of the 5 most visited cites in the UK.
1. London - with no surprise as to which city was going to top this list, the official statistics show that in 2008, the capital city of England received 14.8 million visitors who came to sample the delights of the city from abroad.
Packed full of sights and attractions to please absolutely everyone, from world class theatre productions and musicals to being home to the restaurants of some of the most popular chefs at the moment to iconic landmarks such as Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, as well as being the home to the Royal Family, it really is no wonder why so many people visit London each year.
2. Edinburgh - although Scotland's capital comes in at second place, it only has a fraction of the overseas visitors that London does, with a figure of 1.2 million.
However, it is generally expected that this figure will continue to rise in the coming years, as Edinburgh has such a vast amount of attractions to see, as well as some world famous events.
For example, Edinburgh Castle is a stunning landmark on the Edinburgh skyline and the Edinburgh Festival in August and Hogmanay on 31 December are both fantastic reasons to visit the Scottish capital city.
3. Manchester - receiving 900,000 visitors, this is a very respectable result, especially for a city that was once known for being simply a heavily industrial, working class city.
Evolving over the past few decades into a part of the country where people want to visit and stay, its position in this list shows that it is without doubt achieving its goal.
4. Birmingham - similar to Manchester, Birmingham was originally an industrious, working class part of England, but has been trying to develop into a city that attracts visitors from around the world, especially over the past two decades.
Receiving only 100,000 visitors less than Manchester in 2008, Birmingham is ranking in the top third of the world's most liveable cities (according to the annual Mercer study), with the local government aiming to increase their position so to be included in the top 20 within the coming years.
5. Glasgow - whilst Edinburgh may be the most visited city in Scotland, Glasgow is the largest and most heavily populated, with approximately 200,000 more people living in Glasgow than in Edinburgh (according to the 2001 censuses).
Seeing 600,000 overseas visitors in 2008, Glasgow is a city that has flourished in recent years, becoming a well known destination for nights out and hen and stag parties, as well as one of the country's prime shopping locations.
