The 5 rules of office etiquette

Everybody knows to mind their Ps and Qs when they are at work as

, even though many offices these days offer a fun' and relaxed atmosphere to get productive in, it's not called work' for nothing. Putting the mine field of office politics to one side, there are still many simple rules which govern office etiquette and, though usually unspoken, adhering to them could make the difference between going places and going nowhere fast.

Staying professional is the obvious approach to keeping up appearances in an office, as this is the base-level criteria for gaining respect and showing colleagues and, importantly, managers that you are serious about your work and able to handle it appropriately. But it's always good practice to know how best to approach certain situations which undoubtedly crop up in most offices at some point.

First of all, avoid gossip. It's not the school yard you're sitting in so don't be tempted to contribute or even encourage idle gossip, as reputations count for a lot in the work place and even though there will always be office gossips, being party to information that doesn't concern you can, at best, make you look petty and immature. Similarly, try not to get caught up in the habit of discussing your personal life once at your desk. Sure your colleagues might wasn't to hear about your recent holiday, but start talking about your doctor's appointment or the weekend at your in-laws and you've pretty much gone too far.

This next rule might not seem too important, as it needn't necessarily creep into your work life, but don't for a second think it can be ignored. In this day and age, professionals more than ever need to be extra vigilant about what goes online under their name. Everybody uses social networks and even if you don't directly post something on yours which could have repercussions, someone else might; so watch what you say and, whatever you do, re-read what you've just typed before hitting post'. Likewise office email should be just that. Even though you might never speak to the IT crowd, that doesn't mean they don't have access to your work emails, and all it takes is one jobs-worth to blab that you've been misusing yours and heads could roll.

Hone your listening skills too, as effective listeners are usually respected far more for their opinion which, in an office, can go a long way. When you are tasked with a project, carefully pay attention to everything that is required of you the first time, so you don't waste colleague's time by asking them to reiterate the objectives and make yourself look clueless.

Finally, keep a hold on your emotions at all times. Cracking a smile and having a laugh are both fine but, if things ever turn stressful, don't fold under the pressure. Stay professional, stay focused and get the job done; as this is the ultimate approach that offices require.
