The AINO - A Versatile Media Phone from Sony Ericsson by:Simon Drew

The new Sony Ericsson Aino announced to be released by the end of 2009

, has been reviewed by pundits who got a taste of the new phone and the verdict seems unanimous. This is a Sony Ericsson that can lay claim as a genuine multimedia handset that's a computer in itself. With any luck, you won't need anything else.

Sony Ericsson designed the Aino with no less than multimedia in mind. Being a smartphone takes the backseat to that. It can connect seamless with your PC or PS3 for streaming multimedia content from anywhere on earth via the Internet. To put more emphatically, you can stream video, music, and live TV broadcast anywhere on earth right into you AINO via the Internet with the ability to record, rewind and pause.

A great multimedia experience

The Aino's media player and gallery get a revamp from previous iteration and are stunning to say the least. Navigating through your multimedia content is not only easy, but the sounds and visualization are gorgeous.

Video recording comes at 30fps with VGA resolution - a feature you expect from high end phones like those flagships from Nokia. The Aino features an 8.1 megapixel camera that comes with LED flash, 16x digital zoom, red-eye reduction, auto focus, face and smile detection. The Aino assuredly carries on the tradition for high quality phone cameras from Sony Ericsson.

High speed connection over 3G with HSPDA and HSUPA support is standard, allowing data speeds that make Internet browsing a fun experience. This also benefits the streaming video and audio content when connecting remotely to your PC or PS3. With its microSD support that can go as high as 16Gb, your space hugging media files become easily and cheaply accommodated in your handset.

Just a couple of Caveats

The Aino's User Interface could have been a lot better. Sony Ericsson couldn't seem to decide on going full touchscreen or not. The UI takes from both, as you still had to slide the phone and use its keypad when the touchscreen could have sufficed for all your navigational controls. But having said that, the Aino's touchscreen features are just first rate and certainly can take on the competition anytime. It still falls short of the mobile experience one gets from the iPhone, but it excels in touchscreen features when the phone is in media mode.

One other feature that shouldn't be missing in a multimedia phone is the 3.5mm audio output jack. While it's a consolation that the supplied earphones have good sonic quality, the Aino user should not be deprived of the option to use some of the finest high fidelity earphones in the market. Especially for a high end media gadget as this.

Those two caveats aside, the Aino is one formidable media phone with innovative and versatile features to keep the competition on its toes.
