When choosing a colocation provider to manage your data, there are a number of factors to consider, one of which is location. Almost half of the UKs data centres are located in London, and while London-based data centres do offer some advantages, such as good connectivity and ease of access, there are also many disadvantages. Here is a look at some advantages of using a data centre outside of London.

Due to space restrictions and building costs, many London-based data centres are housed in old buildings or warehouses, which were originally designed for an alternative use. A major advantage of using a data centre outside the city is that they are often new and therefore custom built to reflect best-in-class infrastructure and utilise next generation technologies.
Next generation data centres are also built with energy efficiency in mind, with features such as free air cooling offering a much more energy and cost efficient alternative to running traditional, power-hungry chiller units round-the-clock. Needless to say, a data centre with low power consumption results in better efficiency and savings for the client.
Power availability
Buildings in London inevitably suffer power outages from time to time, which as a consequence can force data centre providers to rely on fail-over power generators. Often this fail-over process is tested infrequently - if at all - and can cause temporary total power outages which would have a detrimental effect on all data centre hosted equipment. Outside London, power availability can be much more easily secured, significantly reducing the risk of data centre power outages.
Costs
The rising costs of property and floor space in London, have forced providers to increase their service costs. Choosing a data centre outside the city, can be highly advantageous in terms of costs, particularly for businesses that require a lot of rack space and power.
Terrorist threats
London is renowned for having the best connectivity in the country, and is an ideal location for city-based businesses, from a physical access point of view. However, being such a large metropolitan area, and as the UKs capital city, London is much more vulnerable to terrorist attacks than quieter, out of town locations. While terrorist attacks are rare, and an unpleasant thought, they are a risk that should be taken into consideration.
Olympics
The London Olympics is sure to have an adverse affect on Londons communications, with the influx of people and devices set to leach much of the citys power in the build up and during the games. Some London-based
colocation providers have even been told by their energy suppliers that their energy needs will not be met this side of the Olympics, which could potentially present major problems for both the provider and the client.
So while London does offer many colocation benefits, its clear to see why more and more businesses are being drawn to out of town data centres. While often less convenient in terms of accessibility, data centres outside London offer high performance and less risk at a significantly cheaper cost.
