All quality coverings are are made from special weather resistant fabric that is stretched over a steel supporting structure. The material is sun and rain proof. They are also built to withstand corrosion.

Operable awnings were first utilized during the late 1800's. There first appearance were over the local shop windows and doors. The supporting structures were made of steel and were movable due to attached hinges. The structure could be lowered or raised by pulling a rope. A simple device that provided needed coverage.

The awnings were made of a thick canvas usually made of cotton. It was tightly stretched over the framework of the structure to provide the adjustable coverage. The hinges allowed the framework to be adjusted so that the awning could be put out or retracted depending on the need. It could be fully or partially let out.

But there were some problems with the original design. Once the awning was retracted, the covering would oftentimes gather up against the facade of the building. This caused unwanted sun and rain exposure. The canvas material was another issue. Cotton does not hold up well against the elements. They would have to be replaced on a regular basis due to deterioration. This is no longer an issue since more modern materials, that were not available then, are now used.

Retractable awnings have several different functional benefits. It is a wonderful convenience to be able to protect you your deck or patio from sun or rain exposure. You can still enjoy your deck if the sun becomes too hot or when it rains. Homeowners are no longer forced to go inside when the weather conditions are not optimal.

Therefore, this reduces the need for using the air conditioner which saves on energy. Awnings also provided added protection to furniture, drapes and carpets.
