The Advantages To Using An Interactive Whiteboard In The Classroom
In the past few decades a variety of research has indicated that there are a number
of different learning styles, including visual learners, auditory learners, and tactile or kinetic learners, these are people who learn best through doing, so they are most responsive to hands on practical examples. In light of this information about learning styles the education authorities have begun looking at ways in which these particular preferences could be exploited. However, thinking up new and innovative teaching techniques that involve these learning styles can often prove to be more challenging than it first seems, particularly to think of teaching technique that will appeal to all learners.
Fortunately we very much live in the digital age, and with an abundance of new technology we are seeing an increasing number of opportunities for creative teaching techniques. Multimedia presentations have quickly become the standard for many classrooms and business conferences, allowing the educator or businessman to bring new dimensions to their lesson or pitch. The fact that these audio-visual techniques are finding their way into classrooms around the world should come as no surprise, they bring a lot of potential to the lesson and are quickly becoming a standard for communication. Provided the media content is coherent with the lesson content or subject matter then audio-visual techniques that interactive whiteboards have to offer can be extremely effective.
For any students with a preference for auditory learning techniques information that is written or spoken is most effective, recording lectures can be a useful way of reaching them. For those that prefer to have visual aids, where the slide show projector once ruled over all it now seems to be almost obsolete now that interactive whiteboards and PowerPoint presentations come about. Incorporating visual aid such as charts, graphs, photos, videos, and graphics is a straightforward process and can yield some good results. A teacher that spends the time finding the appropriate picture for the content is more likely to see more significant results in their pupils learning, after all a picture is worth a thousand words.
With an Internet connection an interactive whiteboard provides even more opportunities, videos can be streamed or downloaded. If they are incorporated into a presentation then it can be useful to brief the students before playing it, so they know what theyre looking for and understand how it relates back to the subject. By doing so they will be engaged and therefore will develop a better understanding based on logic and reasoning.
