Electronic cigarettes are a highly sought-after device by smokers and non-smokers alike. Seen in use by celebrities and promoted as an alternative to ordinary cigarettes, electronic cigarettes have an edge over their traditional counterparts. Many of the health hazards, for example, are gone; tar, tobacco, and other carcinogens added are not used, and even nicotine is optional. Cost, as well, is reduced over time. Packs of cigarettes do not need to be bought on a regular basis; instead, only the cartridges and battery are replaced on occasion.

All electronic cigarettes start with a kit, which contains the basic parts for the device: a battery, an atomizer, and a set of cartridges. A battery charger is also part of the kit. When the device is put together and activated, the battery allows the atomizer to heat up, which in turn vaporizes the liquid inside the cartridge. The liquid, which is flavor dissolved in propylene glycol or vegetable glycerin, may or may not contain nicotine.

Even with several flavors available, including tobacco and those matching specific cigarette brands, cartridges can contain nicotine inside. Combined with holding the cigarette, the nicotine simulates the sensation of smoking for the user.

Saving money is another advantage of using electronic cigarettes. The kit costs an upfront amount of $80, which could be the amount someone spends on cigarettes for a week or a month, but not having to regularly purchase packs cuts down on this cost. Only batteries and cartridges need to be replaced on occasion. The cartridges, usually sold with five in a pack for ten dollars, last significantly longer than packs of cigarettes. One cartridge lasts as long as 15 to 20 cigarettes; a set, then, lasts as long as 75 to 100 cigarettes.

Electronic cigarettes also have fewer health hazards. Although cartridges can contain nicotine, the device does not use tobacco, tar, or other carcinogens added to ordinary cigarettes. The device, as well, does not emit smoke, as vapor is only inhaled through the mouthpiece. As a result, it can be used in far more places without adding secondhand smoke into the surrounding area.
