The Age of TV
There is no doubt that we lived in the age of TV and today we witness the dawn of television. The good old box is backing from the new aggressive forms of media and still evolving into new forms which have even more than a brighter perspective.
The Beginning
After the invention of the radio, the scientists focused their efforts on creating a way to broadcast pictures. The technological basis was ready, so after a few experiments the telly came to its modern form. Between the wars it entered the consumer market as something close to a luxury device, which yet had a very limited functions and small screen. Yet it was a real technological wonder and definitely had a bright future ahead of it!
The Rising
After the Second World War two important events occurred in the history of the television. First it became colored and second the price in the US dropped to more affordable $200. If you remember the popular sci-fi movie Back to Future, there was a joke about the TV. The protagonist travelled back in time from 1985 to 1955 and people in 1955 are still speaking of TV as of something expensive, yet most of the families already have one. For the next 50 years TV became one of the icons of humanity and a very influential symbol which often had some negative tones due to its usage for propaganda and overuse of advertising. The 80th were definitely the peak of the TV age. The whole entertainment had TV as its main element and numerous science-fiction movies praised TV and the telly itself shows as the defining sign of the future. In addition to this gaming consoles and home video also contributed to the popularity of the TV.
The Demise
In the 90th a new power entered the media world and it was the Internet. At first no one viewed it as a threat for the television, but in time, mostly after the concept of Web 2.0 was introduced. Internet managed to change the whole concept of getting information and most importantly allowed to make information. This nearly killed the informative function of the TV and together with the rising of the video games and movies switching to DVDs and downloading also had a devastating effect on the entertainment part. Eventually the television became a symbol of something old and useless, while the Internet became the new word in the world of media. Still new forms of television stepped in at this time, television went digital and the concept of interactive TV also became real.
The Future
As for the future surprisingly there are some bright things for the television ahead. Technologies like Internet TV and Interactive TV give the TV set some new functionality and some experts even predict that it might replace the PC as the main point of internet access. The television has a larger screen is more comfortable for the whole family and with a keyboard and mouse attached. So the good old telly still has some potential!
