The Alarming Correlation Between Espionage And Passports

Border security is in the headlines a lot lately and rightfully so

. Passports play a big roll in making it possible for illegal immigrants and terrorists to cause problems. Since they know how to get an American passport, the security of the United States has been compromised. Recently, you may have seen on the news the story about the spies actually being caught within our borders.

Very recently, ten Russian spies were caught in New York City. Once captured, these people did not even deny their evil intentions and actions. After pleading guilty to acting as unregistered agents for a foreign country, which is another description of a spy, they were sent back to Russia in an exchange for four American spies. Money laundering charges were also made against these people but these charges were dropped. This is the larges number of spies caught in the United States since the cold war.

One of the lead members of the spy ring was Anna Chapman. Previous Anya Kushchenko, she married a British citizen named Alex Chapman in 2002 which gave her British citizenship and the ability to get a legitimate passport. They divorced in 2006 after she had renewed her friendship with Russian friends and it was all downhill after that. She later moved to the United States with other Russian spies and easily gained entrance by shower her official British passport.

After moving to New York, she commenced her collaboration with the Russians. After a time, she became fearful that she was the subject of suspicion by U.S. agents and called her father in Russia, Vasily Kushchenko, to tell him of her concerns. This phone call was a real break for U.S. agents and was instrumental in leading to her capture.

After being discovered, her citizenship in the United Kingdom was cancelled as well as her passport thereby revoking her re-admittance to the United Kingdom. This was a good example of just how important new U S passports are. The passport bureau is diligent in checking to be sure that fake passports are identified in the name of national security. This is a big job because it is well known all over the world how important and powerful a passport really is.
