The Algarve on the southern coast of Portugal is a perfect winter holiday destination for those looking for a low cost break to escape the Northern European winter. The climate of the Algarve in Portugal is sub-tropical. Along the Algarve coast, winter daytime temperatures typically peak at between 14 and 18 degrees centigrade. The temperatures are perfect for golf, walking, fishing, bird-watchingor simply to enjoy exploring the many towns and villages of the Algarve.

The capital of the Algarve is Faro, and Faro international Airport is located around 12km from Faro town centre. Most of the low cost flight operators include Faro in their destination list, and during the winter months there are plenty of low cost flight bargains available. The flight time is around 2.5 to 3 hours depending on the airport which you are flying from.

Portugal is generally slightly more expensive than Spain,a bottle of local beer typically costs around 1 Euro in many bars away from the tourist hotspots. A packet of cigarettes is around 3.5 Euros and a meal will typically cost around 15 Euros per head. Sardines are the regional food of the Algarve, and there are many fresh fish restaurants throughout the Algarve. There are plenty of good local wines for a good red, the Alentejo region produces wines of excellent quality, and the green wines (a white with a slight fizz) are perfect with fish.

There are plenty of Hotels in and around Faro, making the town a great destination for a weekend break. If you want to stay in Faro itself, the Hotel Eva is located on the busy Faro Marina. Within a 2 minute walk from the hotel there are a number of outdoor cafes and restaurants surrounding the Marina, where visitors can enjoy the local food and drink of the Algarve. On the outskirts of Faro there are reasonably priced hotels at the Ibis and the Monaco (both are within 3 or 4 km from the airport. The Hotel Aeromar in Faro beach is also reasonably priced, and has a great local bar with excellent value food and drink.

If you are based in Faro, a carrental from Faro Airport can be found foraround 10 Euros per day in winter. From Faro, it is possible to get to the spain border in an hour, and the towns of Tavira, Albufeira, Quarteira, Lagos and many more are all within 1-1,5 hours drive. There is a good coastal train service from Faro to Tavira, so if you prefer not to drive, the train is a good option. Whatever you are looking for, the Algarve will offer you a friendly welcome and is a place that you will want to visit again and again.
