The players take alternate turns in moving their pieces and it should be noted that only one piece can be moved at a time with an exception on castling where movements of two pieces are allowed. Usually the player with the light colored pieces go first and the piece can land on an empty square or one which is occupied by an opponents piece but will be captured and removed from the game.
