The Amazing Beauty Of Lago De Atitlan

Lake Atitlan, or Lago de Atitlan, is an amazingly beautiful lake of volcanic provenience located in Guatemala

. On its shoreline you will find plenty of small quaint towns where people passionate about backpacking can always find a place to sleep and eat. While the area was not designed for tourism in the past, it now is aware of the opportunities presented by the tourism and the towns are developing. Panajachel is the name of the best known town in the neighborhoods of Lago de Atitlan, but there are many others like San Pedro la Laguna, and San Marcos.

Many come here for the laid back atmosphere and because it is not crowded like many great tourist destinations. Here you can enjoy the views or take a stroll on the shoreline to relax away from the maddening crowd. Also, if you like to learn more about the history of the area, there are traces of the old Mayan culture everywhere so if you want to feel a little like Indiana Jones, there is no better place to do so then in the areas surrounding Lago de Atitlan.

The lake presents a lot of fun opportunities. You can go kayaking - there are kayak rentals readily available along the shoreline towns - or you can rent a jet ski to enjoy the waters. If diving is your thing, this can be done in Santa Cruz la Laguna, where a local hostel will provide you with all the necessary items for a great diving experience. Horseback riding is also among the most popular activities that tourists come here like to indulge in.

Hiking around the lake is also possible, but be aware of the fact that the path is rather precarious and some areas belong to the new accommodations erected on the shoreline. Swimming is also one of the most rewarding activities that takes place here at Lago de Atitlan, so you can spend some really great afternoons just enjoying the waters.

There are no less then three volcanoes in the neighborhood, San Pedro, Atitlan, and Toliman. If you want to go on an exploration trip, there is no better way to do that then renting a motorcycle.

The Mayan culture is present almost everywhere, if you take your time to visit the small towns around the lake. While doing that you will encounter people still wearing traditional costumes which they wear everyday like their forefathers before them.

Archaeological sites are also abundant so if you are interested in a trip through history you should visit Sambaj, a site where many Mayan buildings were discovered. Another important site is Chiutinamit, that holds vestiges of a world that once was. What is very important about these archaeological discoveries is that the buildings were situated below the lake water level, looking more like settlements underwater.

Whenever you travel to Lago de Atitlan don't forget your backpack! There are plenty of things to see and do if you are an outdoor enthusiast!
