Gaming on mobile phones is no new thing, since the days of the earliest Nokias consumers were addicted to the likes of Snake. It is pleasing to see that the phone aspects of this handset have not been overlooked. Out of the box the Xperia Play sports the very latest version of the popular operating system Android. This new 2.3 version offers improvements in both battery life as well as predictive text, aimed at making the composition of messages easier. An essential element of this handset is speed as without it, the gaming element would be worthless, thus the presence of a 1Ghz processor ensures every aspect of this phone performs at maximum speed. This chip is teamed with 512MB of RAM as well as a graphics accelerator that further improves the gaming experience. Anybody wanting to use this phone extensively for photographs or video recording will rely upon the micro SD card slot that is on offer as the phone only comes with 400MB of internal storage, however this card slot does accept cards up to 32GB. The camera itself keeps up with other smartphones such as the Samsung Galaxy S by offering a 5.1 mega pixel camera that is boosted by always useful features such as auto focus and a flash for darker conditions. Sony Ericssons have always been known for their audio facilities, and this is no exception with multiple file formats accepted as well as a handy 3.5mm stereo socket available for your own choice of headphones.

The gaming element of the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play is superb. The device is similar to the Sony PSP gaming device, except in this instance th controls are located on a slider mechanism rather than to the sides of the screen in order to keep the size compact. This makes the phone similar in size to many handsets sporting a full Qwerty keypad at 119 x 62 x 16mm and a weight of 175 grammes. When activated the slider gives you a directional set of keys to the left which are mirrored on the right by four action buttons. Between these are two touch pads in the place of physical joysticks for extra precision. The gaming experience is further enhanced by the excellent screen on offer. At 4 inches the display is perfect size wise not only for gaming but a host of other uses such as web browsing. At 480 x 854 pixels, resolution is amongst the best available whilst the 16 million colour count ensures the display is as vivid as can be.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play takes a high end smartphone and adds into the equation a superb gaming experience, resulting in a truly great phone.
