The American: A Film Of Extraordinary Accomplishments

I cannot stop talking about this film

I cannot stop talking about this film. It is simply a masterpiece of the most epic proportions. A cinematic experience for the highest of brows, the pretentiousness of the film made me appreciate it so much more than the exciting and action packed spy thrillers that The American is obviously breaking away from. Its sweeping cinematic views are exactly what you expect from director Anton Corbijn who is an amateur photographer and his eye for beauty heavily influences the films rich scenes. Personally, I am sick of George Clooneys

over hyped rolls that have made him millions upon millions of dollars throughout his career. What are they but mindless garbage? The American shows a new side of Clooney, a quiet, impassive side in which Clooney seems to take on the essence of a refrigerator: cool, calm, white, and impassive.

Amazing Dialogue

The structure of the dialogue is crafted like that of a fine wine picked from the very vineyards that must have surrounded the Italian town where the movie was shot. It takes time, a lot of time, in between the mere 500 lines and each one is like a refreshing sip of Merlot it makes you want so much more but you know it wont come because you are but a prepubescent teen who has been allowed by the grace of Corbijn to have a small glass with dinner in hopes of educating you about the finer things in life.

Incredible Character Development

I hate movies that define a character with back story and clich development techniques like plot, dialogue, or action. What I loved about The American is that it told me absolutely nothing about any of the characters on screen. I assume the Clooney is an old assassin looking to get out while he can, because otherwise the movie would not make a lick of sense, but the director allows me to fill in the gooey details with my vivid imagination rather than pigeon holing the characters. The mechanic who turns out to be the priests son refuses payment for the car parts. Why? Who knows! But I like to think that his job as a mechanic is merely a front for his black market fig running scheme.

Clear Plot

Some movies like to explain why the things that are happening on screen matter and what the end goal is. Ha! What a backwards and shallow way to produce a film. The American takes a different route and makes everything incredibly ambiguous which is refreshing. I do not need to know why ineffective Swedish assassins might be trying to kill off Clooney, all I need to know is that Clooney might, or might not, think they are. Confused? So am I, and that is the way I like it.

If you saw the trailers for The American you will not be disappointed in the film. Every single action scene in the movie is actually fit into the two minute long trailers in their entirety so you know the director did not want to mislead his audience. The rest of the 103 minutes of screen time is filled with a gripping story and rich characters that will leave average movie goers confused and irate, but for the critics and serious movie

fanatics like myself, I was all too glad to not waste an hour and a half of my time.
