The Architecture Of Seville, Spain
It has a soaring and powerful nave, and is one of the Gothic glories that Europe has to offer
. Supposedly constructed over the foundation of a mosque, it has a square base and this five aisle church is uncompromised. It's only rival is St. Peter's in Rome. It is also the burial site of famed explorer Christopher Columbus.
There are many other sites that should also be seen to be believed. One of them is the Plaza de Espana, the epitome of Moorish Revival in Spanish buildings, and possibly the most recognized buildings in Seville, Spain. This is a large half circle of buildings that are accessed by many bridges crossing a protective moat. While today it houses many of Seville's government buildings, it still retains all of its beauty. There are many different ways to explore the Plaza, but the best way is by renting a row boat and going around it by it's moat. The exterior walls have an abundance of tiled alcove that represent the different provinces of Spain. It was also shown in two different movies, as the Great Britain's army headquarters in Cairo in the movie Lawrence of Arabia, as well as the setting for Naboo, in Attack of the Clones, the second in the Star Wars saga, although is was modified digitally.
Some other places of interest that you should also see is the World Heritage Monument, the Alcazar. Antigua Fabrica de Tabacos, now the university in Seville, as once a massive tobacco factory and the cornerstone of Seville's economy. It was built in the 18th century and the workplace of Carmen, the Bizet's opera heroine. It was a factory up until the middle of the last century.
Another place to go is Ayuntamiento, or Plaza de San Francisco. It has a lively history, dating back past the 16th century, when it was used as Seville's public square. Not only was it a market in Muslim times, but also a prime spot for inquisition burnings. At the southern end, a beautifully encrusted Renaissance Carving dates back between 1520-1530.
With all the historical and architectural landmarks to see, you should really take the time to go on one of the many guided tours available. It is also a good idea to stay in one of the spectacular hotels Seville has to offer, and a good way to do this is to book your reservations online. There are many different websites to choose from, and discount packages available. You should also book any tours at this time, since they tend to fill up rather quickly during prime tourist seasons.
Just make sure that you check for any hidden fees, like taxes or extra charges for single occupancy rooms. It is a good idea to leave your valuables in your hotel room, because although Seville is a spectacular and friendly city to visit, there are also many pick pockets hiding out in crowds. Keep any money in a secure money pouch, and don't travel alone.
