The Art of Copying - Understanding photocopiers
Need an extra copy of the latest report? One of the most standard pieces of equipments in any office is the photocopier
. Most of us probably don't give much thought to how they work or what goes on once you lay your original on the glass - but it's worth taking a look.
These days, photocopiers come in all forms - many offices utilise multifunction printers that serve as photocopiers, scanners, printers and fax machines in one. Meanwhile, many all-in-one units for home use, including inkjet printers, may also include a copying function.
How do photocopiers work?
Despite their new forms, the process of
reprographics and photocopying has remained generally unchanged for years. It utilises some relatively simple and highly efficient technology to make fast and accurate duplicates of your documents.
1. Light - first and foremost, photocopiers shine an intense beam of light across your document. The light gets reflected off the lighter parts of the paper to create an electrically charged "image" of your document.
2. Drum - the "image" is then transferred to a drum in the photocopier. Only certain parts of the drum will become charged with static electricity - these are dependent on the darker areas of the "image" that was made from your document.
3. Toner - the drum is then brushed with toner, which consists of very fine particles that get attracted to the static charge of the drum. Only the parts of the drum that were statically charged by the "image" attract the toner, the rest stay blank.
4. Paper - Paper is then passed through the toner covered drum, picking up the black toner particles. The paper is then heat treated in the machine so that the toner adheres to the page, making your copy. This whole process takes just a couple seconds, and since the whole page is "imaged" and processed at the same time - it is one of the quickest ways to make duplicates of any black and white documents.
Meanwhile, the process for colour copies is the same, except that the page gets passed through multiple colours of toner to create the entire spectrum of colours that we see.
You don't need to understand how your photocopier works to know how important they are to your office. These days, there are plenty of great photocopying options for your office - including
multifunction printers that can integrate seamlessly into your office workflow.
