The Art of Tig Welding
The art of TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding is something that will never be out of date. Those who know how to do this technique will surely never be left jobless. This welding process has been available for some time but it continue to be a popular application these days.
TIG welding, also called as the gas tungsten art welding (GTAW) is a welding process which makes use of a nonconsumable tungsten electrode to produce weld. The tungsten electrode works by heating the metal you are welding and a gas, which is most commonly, Argon, is protecting the weld puddle from airborne contamination.
This welding technique is very beneficial because it is able to weld more kinds of metals and alloys compared to any other welding processes. It can weld steel, stainless steel, aluminum, copper, brass, bronze, chromoly, nickel alloys, magnesium, and even gold. TIG is an advantageous process for welding wagons, bike frames, door handles, fenders and many more stuffs.
This type of welding process is also known to produce high quality and clean welds. It is armed with a first class arc and weld puddle control that enables the welders to create clean surfaces. The heat control of TIG welding is controlled by pressing a foot pedal that allows heating up and cooling down of the puddle that results to a definite weld bead control.
It also doesn't make sparks or spatters if the metal being weld is clean. It doesn't need flux or slag because the argon gas already protects the weld puddle from any forms of contamination. It doesn't produce annoying smokes or fumes unless the metal that is being weld is positive of contaminants or other elements like oil, paint, grease, lead or zinc.
Most engineers prefer the TIG welding process because of its low-hydrogen properties and its match of mechanical and chemical properties with the material that is being used as the base. Superior weld quality can be assured by maintaining cleanliness of the entire operation. Meaning all equipments and materials that will be used should be free from any of the following elements, oil, moisture, dirt and other impurities that may cause weld porosity and eventually, a decrease in weld strength and quality.
Some places that you may see products of TIG welding are in Aero-sapce industry, hospital equipments, dairy production, and lightweight bicycle industry.
It is absolutely a good move to try to learn the art of TIG welding. Not only that is in demand today, you can also be assured that all welders who shows great performance in practicing the technique will surely be never out of work.
