There was always something romantic about bartenders! Thousands of books, movies and songs have made the image of a bartender a really cult figure whether it is a rude and ugly bartender or a cute young guy mixing cocktails it is always impressive. First thing that a future bartender needs to understand is that being a bartender is not just about mixing drinks. Of course this is the essential part of every bartender, but like in many other jobs there more is involved! Bartender is basically the first guy that says hello to you when you enter a bar. He or she (if it is a barmaid) is the face of the joint and the most important representatives. It depends on him whether the client stays for a while or decides to leave. Now who'd guessed that? A usual bartender has two main tasks mixing drinks and listening to people, but first things first.

The Drinks

To learn how to mix multiple types of drinks and cocktails you'll need to go to some kind of bartender school. And in this case try to pick the one that not only teaches to mix everything in the right proportions, but also teaches the understanding of ingredients. A bartender that knows what is standing behind his back and how it works will always be capable of mixing something good. This is especially helpful if the night is busy and Jagermeister for example is gone.

After the school is finished practice, practice, practice! Few months behind the bar and you will become a master of mixing the right way and mixing the nice way. If you have time to experiment and practice you can always develop your own shows and if you are familiar with ingredients your own cocktails.

The Talking

Second task is to learn to listen and to learn being friendly. This is highly important because lot of people come to the bars just to talk about their problems. As for drinks they'll be just satisfied with a glass of whisky or a beer. Nevertheless these are also customers that at some points are even more loyal to their own neighborhood pub. Of course there is no school that can teach a bartender the talking part, so if you feel that you are really annoyed by listening to people try to look for another job. There are thousands of jobs out there and dozens of them are probably your dream jobs that you are just unaware of.

Being a bartender is not such a long mastered art but becoming a good bartender will require a lot of time and still the basics before that. But this will pay off, high-class bartenders not only have good salaries, but also work in an interesting environment (hint: a possibility of meeting and befriending celebrities is included). So if you always dream about mixing and listening don't hesitate.
