The ATV or All Terrain Vehicle, called a quad bike in some other countries

, made its first appearance in the 1950's. The first vehicles had six wheels. In 1970 Honda introduced a three wheel version. Balloon tires were substituted for a proper suspension originally. Early in the 1980's a mechanical suspension and low profile tires were developed. Canadian and American hunters made the vehicles hugely popular because of their off-road capabilities, and a supporting industry was born supplying ATV accessories.

Honda produced a 4 X 4 version in 1986 which was an immediate success with farmers, construction workers and hunters. The vehicles could pull dump beds with smallish loads and smaller trailers were manufactured for convenience.

Together with the huge choice of vehicles available, there is also a thriving industry which supplies an enormous range of accessories to the global brotherhood of enthusiasts who also have an equally large variety of uses for their vehicles. Quad bike racing is extremely popular around the world as is off-road exploring and one modification has seen the fitting of tracks and a scraper for moving snow. The few mentioned, only just scrape the surface of what's available.

Because many enthusiasts are so passionate about their machines, protection rides high on the list of available accessories with strong, durable covers made from heavy duty nylon, polyester, vinyl materials guaranteed to protect the quad bike in any sort of weather.

For the adventurer, venturing into uncharted territory, there is a mount for a GPS unit and a similar mount for a cell phone. When evening falls, the spotlight mounting will be very useful and when the weather turns cold, there are heating kits for the hand grips which can be set for varying degrees of heat. That cup of coffee or soft drink can, will be held firmly in the cup holder although there are no guarantees that any of the liquid will stay there on rough ground.

Not every trip is plain sailing from beginning to end. Provision has to be made for those emergencies that often crop up while being miles away from anywhere. Several popular named winches are now available for use by ATV's. Smaller than the versions used by their larger cousins in the heavy duty 4 X 4 class, they are nevertheless powerful enough to pull the quad bike out of most situations. Together with the winches are a collection of tough remote controls, cables, rollers, hooks and brackets that will fit many machines on the market.

One company is now manufacturing a blade for a snow plough attachment on an ATV. This gives the vehicle owner another use for his vehicle when it is not out in the wilderness. The popularity of these off-road vehicles has spawned a supporting industry supplying various items of clothing, gloves, T-shirts, caps and a host of other ATV accessories which identify the owner as part of an elite group of off-road vehicle users.
