At the 2011 Geneva Motor Show Audi unveiled a striking new Audi A3 concept; it was presented as a saloon or "Notchback" which had many eyebrows raised. Almost as striking as the saloon style body was the highly powerful engine under the bonnet. The one off Audi design concept is the fastest ever factory-produced Audi A3 and is characteristically laden with technological advances in everything from construction to infotainment.
The A3 concept boasted a 400 PS five cylinder diesel engine capable of doing 0-62mph in a very respectable 4.1 seconds. The diesel power plant can go on to do an electronically limited 155mph while still returning 31mpg on the combined cycle and emit 212g/km of CO2. According to Audi the A3 Concept can achieve excellent fuel economy and low CO2 emissions because it uses Audi's thermo-management system and an energy recovery system as well as a regulated oil pump. The rack-and-pinion steering also draws minimal power because its electromechanical drive system requires no energy when driving straight ahead. The seven speed S Tronic gearbox with a double clutch also helps optimise efficiency.
For the first time in its history the concept Audi A3 in Southampton also featured the Audi drive select dynamic handling system which gives the driver five modes with which to fine-tune engine characteristics, power steering feel and gear shift points for the seven-speed S tronic transmission. As well as the more familiar comfort, auto, dynamic and individual settings, the latest iteration of the system features an efficiency mode designed for maximum economy.
The control button for the MMI multimedia system is located on the centre console, and for the first time the surface of its large rotary pushbutton incorporates the touch pad for the MMI touch system which allows the driver to 'write' navigation destinations and other commands using a fingertip similar to what is available on the Audi A7.
