. There are not enough closets, not enough shelves, and all other rooms in the house are full. Even the garage is full, no room for the car. It is time for a back yard storage shed. It goes without saying that if my busy body aunt said, "you do not need this anymore, throw it away or give it away." I would respond strongly saying..."wait a minute, that is my personal stuff, do not be so quick to get rid of it. Even if I do not use it today, it may still have value for tomorrow." We are all guilty of being pack rats. Some people are worse than others. However, today, we will solve the storage problem by building a back yard storage shed. Let your mind go back to a time in history when you could build a shed from tree limbs or tree branches. It may have workedfor the natives in the tropical island, but not today. It was not uncommon in the past to construct a storage area using the interor of a cave, or constructing a storage container with sticks and animal skins. In the world of today animal skins would not be an acceptable choice. I could dig a hole in the back yard and bury my belongings, but that would be a dirty detail every time I wanted to either put something else away or I needed to dig out what I wanted. No, that is not a very good idea. Iown several prefab metal type sheds, which I still have, but they are rusty.The walls are bulging with an overload of stuff and the doors have collapsed. The screws have separated from the metal allowing insects passage into my storage boxes. As you know, products change and after doing some shopping, I decided to build a wood storage shed. Nowadays, there are many shed designs to choose from as the shed is more than functional. Shed designs have expanded to include architectural design and construction to duplicate the house on the property. Some have electricity and plumbing. You probably know this, but I did not. It seems to me that the style of the shed is identified by the style of the roof. The typical storage shed has a gabled roof.This is a simple pitched roof which peaks inthe middle. The rise of the peak can be a few inches or taller and its sides slope downwards to either side of the building. The second type has a gambrel roof which means it isshaped like a barn and the roof trusses offer options for more storage space. The lean to is a narrow shed which holds just a few items, e.g. a lawnmower and a few garden tools. This can be built against your fencing or your house. The salt box is similar to a gable, but the roof length is uneven. One side is longer than the other. This building can be made into a small greenhouse, a toy shed, a potting shed, and many other storage shed designs. Be as creative as you wish because storage shed designs not only offer storage function, but the building itself can add character, interest, and value to your property. Other roof choices can be built. You may want to consider octagon, circular, or other distinctive designs. There are many woods that can be used to build your shed. Cedar is one of the choice woods. Pine is commonly used. Check with your local lumber department and stay with the woods that are particular or as recommended in your part of the country.
