When one hears of the word Bali, what would automatically be thought of are the powdery white sands
, Bali temples, huge Mt. Batur, spas, chic hotels and restaurants, beach activities, panoramic sunrise and sunset,
Bali luxury villas and Bali villas resort, and warm and hospitable people. What people do not take note of is the love and passion of the Balinese people for arts.
One other must-see in Bali is its arts festival. The Bali Arts Festival is a truly exciting and well-prepared for one because it is held for an entire month where exhibitions are held. There are daily performances, handicraft exhibitions, as well as cultural and commercial activities. During this whole month, dances that have long been forgotten and taken for granted are revived as well as food contests and offerings are also held. What makes this a truly unique festival is that it is colorful, full of life, and exciting and the Balinese people and government does not even invest too much money on it.
Such Bali arts festival is held in Denpasar and is considered as the biggest cultural event in the archipelago.
How did the Bali arts festival begin? It was in 1964, the time when tourism took off, that officials pursued the belief that if tourism was to be accepted and promoted, then it would have to be cultural tourism.
According to the Balinese, "tourism should be for Bali instead of Bali for tourism." Such thought is owed to its former Director General of Culture who was also Governor of Bali, Ida Bagus Mantra. On the macro level, there was an inventory of the local music groups, dances, and cultural events. As the level went higher, there had been contests and support for them. To promote their culture, there were already schools for dances and art that were erected which includes the Kokar Conservatory and the STSI School of Dance and Music.
