The Basic Steps To Obtaining An Asbestos Register In Sydney
Beginning with the new asbestos legislation in December
, 2003, any home or commercial structure built prior to this time is required to obtain an asbestos register in Sydney, and all of New South Wales. These new regulations were instituted for a very important purpose; to preserve the health and safety of individuals, as asbestos is now known to cause irreversible effects to human health and well-being. Although asbestos itself is a bit of a hot topic, the procedure for obtaining (and maintaining) a current asbestos register for your Sydney property is a relatively simple one. Here are the basic steps you can expect to go through once youve made contact with a certified asbestos removal or consultation service.
Step 1: Asbestos Testing
The first step to bringing your property into compliance with the asbestos register Sydney regulations is to have testing conducted. Asbestos testing will determine whether or not asbestos is present in the structure and, if so, whether or not the material in its present application and location is of significant concern to health and safety.
Step 2: Asbestos Management Plan
If the presence of asbestos is found, then obtaining an asbestos register in Sydney first requires an AMP, or asbestos management plan. The AMP details the various instances of asbestos within the structure, including determinations as to which instances of asbestos pose a threat. These points will then be subject to an asbestos removal strategy. The AMP also details the instances of asbestos which, while not necessarily a threat in their current application, must be evaluated for removal prior to any renovation or demolition projects in the future.
Step 3: Asbestos Removal
In many cases, at least a portion of the asbestos found within the structure will require removal. Asbestos removal MUST be conducted by a licensed, professional agency, and a clearance inspection will be required prior to re-entering the structure. Upon completion of the clearance inspection, however, you can rest assured that all potentially hazardous instances of asbestos have been removed, the air is clear of harmful asbestos fibres, and the overall environment is safe for its occupants.
Step 4: Asbestos Register Maintenance
Once you have obtained an asbestos register for your Sydney property, a certain amount of maintenance is involved in order to remain in compliance with the 2003 regulations. This takes place in the form of: 1) obtaining the necessary permits prior to renovation as they apply to the original asbestos evaluation, 2) reporting any physical changes to the structure occurring after the initial asbestos inspection has been performed, and 3) renewing your asbestos register (even if there have been no changes made to the structure) every five years.
