They come out at night to feed on humans, who are usually unaware of the problem until they wake to find red, itchy bites and swellings.
If these symptoms cause people to suspect that their home might be harboring this parasite, they should take a close look at the sheets on their beds. Adult bugs, a quarter of an inch long and dark brown or orange, are easily seen, and even the pale young bugs are no smaller than a poppy seed. Fecal matter may speckle the sheets with dark dots, and live bugs can be seen by flashlight late at night. Bugs should be identified by consulting an expert or a magnified picture to make sure that they are really bed bugs.
Once the presence of bed bugs is confirmed, there are steps that can be taken, depending on the source of the problem and the area of infestation. Luggage is always suspect, since these pests are usually encountered in travel seats, hotel rooms or dormitories, cruise ships, or other travel accommodations. Luggage should ideally be scrubbed thoroughly before being taken into the home, and all clothing laundered. A simple but effective treatment is to leave the luggage in a closed car in hot weather for a couple of days in the sun. Heat is effective in destroying both bugs and their eggs.
As for the rest of the house, bedding must be washed in hot water, all curtains and other fabrics taken down and cleaned, all sofas and soft chairs thoroughly vacuumed and treated with insecticides. Effective pesticides include growth inhibitors which prevent reproduction, contact killers, and insecticidal dusts that work over a period of days. Mattress bags that seal live bugs and eggs into an impenetrable enclosure are a good idea, to keep them from emerging into the home. All clutter must be eliminated.
Treating a single family house is time consuming and labor intensive, but at least it should suffice if done thoroughly. Apartment dwellers may have a harder time, since adjoining apartments may also be infested. Bugs can travel from other living quarters on each side, above, and below. For this reason, all entry places must be sealed, such as cracks in floors and ceilings, the spaces around door, windows, and baseboards, and anywhere pipes and wires enter the home.
Caution must be taken when traveling, moving into a new home or apartment, or in buying used furniture. These insects can go for long periods without eating, so knowing a house has been vacant is no reason to believe it free of these pests. If pre-treating a house, read all cautions, indications, and directions carefully on insecticides of all types.
