The Basics Of Sub-domains

A sub-domain is a part of a domain and is considered its second level (the top level domain

,TLD, is the first level). For instance, example.com is a TLD whereas movies.example.com and sports.example.com are instances of sub-domains. A sub-domain name does not start with a www. They also don't have their own control panels like a TLDs and are simply additions to the main host. They are considered extensions of the main domain.

A sub-domain is different from an add-on domain. You have to pay an annual fee to maintain an add-on domain, which you don't have to do for a sub-domain, they are free of cost.

The purpose of a sub-domain is to build the main brand. Each sub-domain can also be turned into a separate entity for business purposes. The sub-domain website is an individual website on its own. This is especially useful if someone has a website with many categories and subcategories. You can submit sub-domain for each category separately for search engine rankings. Thus, they help in improving the search engine rankings and improve your overall search engine optimization.

Earlier several businesses preferred not to use sub-domains; because they thought that search engine spiders overlooked them, thus, putting businesses at a disadvantage. However, this is not true and today, some of the best Internet based companies also use sub-domains. It is now known that search engine spiders are not prejudiced against sub-domains. Every sub-domain is considered an individual entity while ranking websites.

To get the best out of your sub-domain, you should keep them in the same subject area. This way they serve as gateways for visitors to website. Creating a sub-domain is a cost effective way of developing multiple websites. Moreover, creating a sub-domain is very easy and you don't need to be technically skilled to do that.

When you set up a website with a host company, you are usually given space to create a sub-domain with that company's name. Normally, you are allowed to create as many sub-domains as you want. However, this is of no use if you wanted to use the name of your own company. Moreover, such host companies may put restrictions on the bandwidth of your sub-domain.
