The Basics Of The Natural Skimboard

The type of Skimboard originated at the Laguna Beach during the 1920s

. Lifeguards used to skim on the sand using pieces of wood. Since then, this technique has become a part of most enthralling sports. Even though boarding is a small sport, it is one of many most high-tech sports in this world. The boards, which are used by professional skimmers, are based on aeronautical technology keeping in mind lightness and buoyancy. Even the boards themselves used by beginners are more technologically advanced than the normal surfboards.

This type of boarding is quite like surfing. The ordinary boarder stands at about 20 feet from the shore and waits for a wave. As soon as the wave hits the shore, the skim boarder runs towards the wave and upon reaching the wet sand drops the board on it and jumps as quickly as possible. Then the wave carries the board into the ocean where the skimmer glides along the waves and makes his way back to the shore.

The first generation of the skim boarders consisted of teenagers from the 70s era. These people were from the Laguna Beach and had an important part during the modernization of this sport. Tex Haines and Peter Prietto were one of the very first who took this task to hand. They opened their own skim board company, Victoria Skim boards.

Once the skimmer has found the right wave, throwing the board on the sand and getting on it comes. This is the most difficult part of the whole skim boarding experience. Beginners usually get hurt in this part and most people do not even take up skim boarding because of the difficulty of this part.

The next step involves preparing for the wave itself. The skimmer must have his body weight properly balanced and on the back foot. This is done so that the board does not plow through the water instead of gliding above it.

Even though the act of riding a skimboard remains a small sport, it is definitely one of the sports that challenges personal skill and gives entertainment at the same time.
