The Basics Steps For Building A Wood Garden Shed
A wood garden shed has many functional uses
A wood garden shed has many functional uses. An outdoor wood garden shed can be used for storing those household items that clutter up the garage, or it can be used as a garden shed not only to store garden tools, but other valuable garden equipment such as mowers, hedge trimmers etc that need to be kept out of harsh weather conditions.
Whatever you're planning to use your outdoor shed for, there are some basic design and construction elements to consider before you begin building, and these include:
- Plans
- Choice of Construction Materials
- Flooring
- Roofing
Plans
In some areas, your local authority may require formal plans to be submitted, or you may have to apply for a permit before building your wood garden shed. But in most areas, storage sheds are permitted without the need for a permit or approval by the local planning authority - as long as the floor area conforms to the maximum square footage allowed for sheds. However, it is still a good idea to have plans for your shed before starting the project, especially if you're going to build it yourself.
A well-planned shed will ensure that you have the correct amount of storage space you need, and it will enable you to order the accurate amount of materials required to complete the job. This will prevent wastage of materials and will save money.
Construction Materials
Choosing wood as the material for construction for an outdoor shed has several advantages. For example, building a shed from metal will probably exceed the skills of the amateur DIY enthusiast. Wood, on the other hand, is lightweight and therefore easy to handle, as well as easy to cut and put together - which is well within the capabilities of most people. And most DIY rookies already possess the woodworking tools necessary to do the job.
Flooring
The flooring can also be constructed of wood. It is essential, however, to use treated lumber for this purpose, for various reasons: for example, constant exposure to wet weather conditions as well as invasion by wood damaging insects. Treated-lumber plywood is recommended for the floor. The floor itself can be a simple deck construction, either on the ground, or slightly raised off the ground.
Roofing
It is a good idea to construct a pitched roof, rather than a flat roof, as this can be used for additional storage space. Another advantage is that a pitched roof will offer better run-off of rain water which will minimize leaking problems in future. It is also advisable to give your roof a generous overhang to keep water splashes away from the walls of the shed. Keep in mind that water is probably the worst enemy of any wooden structure and invariably causes rot.
