The Basics of Designing a Marketing Plan

Even if the economy is down, it doesn't mean that you have to stop marketing in order to work on the very limited budget you have for your business. These trying times is especially the right time to market and reach out to your target clients to let them know that you still exist and that you can still provide them with good customer service and benefits.

And since you are working on a very limited budget for your marketing activities, it is therefore important that you design for your business a effective marketing plan to provide you with the best results you expect.

A marketing plan is a map of where you're going with your promotions. It is what you want to include in your marketing collaterals that would make it easy for you to convey your message to your target clients no matter that your medium is a multipaged color catalog or single sheet hang tags. Your hang tag printing for example will benefit a lot if you have a marketing plan set in place so you can avoid wasting precious resources of your business.

So here are some basic principles for creating a marketing plan that would help any business achieve the results they want from their marketing campaigns.

- What is your basic message? You need to decide first what your core message would be even before you think about your other elements. What do you want to convey to your target clients about your business? The bottom line is to focus your message on your products and services, and how they are going to benefit from these so that your target clients will not be confused when they finally see your marketing campaign.

Always remember this: a clear message is easier to get across if you know what you want to say to your target clients in the first place.

So how do you identify your main message? You have to know your target audience. You can provide a more focused message that can get a favorable response if it is conveyed to the exact people that is likely to be interested in what you have to say. Who are you trying to communicate with your message? Where do they live? What are the demographics of your target audience? The more you know about your target clients, the more specific and targeted your message becomes that it would be something that your target clients would be looking for every time they need to address a concern or an issue.

- Have a logo and brand that is recognizable. Don't forget to design a logo and brand that would exemplify who you are and what you can do. A logo would be a reflection of your brand image, and it would be the very thing that your target clients will remember to associate with your business. So be sure to have one that is reflective of your type of business and personality.

Be sure to have a logo that when your target clients take a look at it, they would be able to know who you are. What you have for your logo exemplifies the type of brand image you would want to be known for. This would make it easier for you to build a relationship with your target clients based on the brand you have.

- Have business cards. You are not a credible and reliable company if you don't have business cards to show for. Business cards are one of the things that people look for in a professional company. So be sure to always have room in your budget for business card printing as your marketing efforts will never be complete with these small pieces of card stock that has your name and all the necessary contact information.

- Finally, get yourself exposed. I don't mean you come out in your birthday suit. You need to become visible to your target market that's why you need to advertise yourself by way of print media. Go to a local newspaper or magazine and have an article written about you in the lifestyle page. Distribute your hang tags and flyers to every door in your community. Pin your business cards and postcards on bulletin boards found in your community and church. While you're getting yourself known, don't forget to explain who you are and what you can do for your customers.

And as always, don't forget to ask for referrals and get your business out there by word-of-mouth. These are the easiest and most inexpensive means for your target clients to know about your business and your benefits. Include them in your marketing plan and you will always get yourself known in your industry no matter that you don't have that much money to market your business.
