The Basics of Surgical Instruments

Many medical student or a doctor then general knowledge of basic surgical instruments is important and neccessary big mis-conception is that only surgeons need to know about surgical instruments. Surgical instruments may be needed in a clinic. Like for ear drainadge. Therefore knowledge about common medical instruments will keep you one step ahead.

Let's first start with the most conventional instrument we use in a general surgical practice and that is dissecting forceps. This particular forceps is also known as the Mitchell's forceps. It's a non-dissecting forceps and usually used to hold things like blood vessels. You may be want to know as to how to grasp dissecting forceps? You want to hold it between your thumb and index finger... kinda of like how you would a pen.

Surgical Scissors are a different category of surgical instruments Unfortunately unlike most surgical sets this does not fall into the orthopedic instruments category. A scissor is mostly used to cut structure. The 2 different types of scissors are curved scissor and straight. The more common is called the metzenbaum curved scissor. Its mainly used for cutting more finer tissue such as a bladder or muscle tissue. The best method to hold the scissors straight is to put your index finger on the joint of the scissors. This ensures a more controlled movement when the scissors are firmly held with your finger. Never be out of control or never lose control of your instruments because sometimes you can cut more of what you intend to cut. So always support the scissors with your finger from the other hand. Another way to regulate how much you want cut is to place your opposite finger at a distance which will help guide your cut better.

The more knowledge you have of medical equipment. The more you extend your knowledge in this field the better you'll be able to diagnosis and work on your patients.
