The Bathroom Suite Through History

A bathroom suite is a place in the home with a bath or someplace for bathing and a toilet area

. Bathroom suites can vary greatly in design and function, depending on the home in which they are located. A simple bathroom will generally contain a bathtub with a shower over it, a toilet and a sink. More extravagent bathrooms may contain a separate tub and shower, a toilet area, multiple sinks and even a sitting area.

The different styles of bathroom suites have changed over time. There are now shower bath suites, master bathrooms and half bathrooms, which contain no bathing area at all. Most modern bathrooms have fully functioning cold and hot running water. They have bathing and toilet areas that provide privacy for anyone in the bathroom.

Bath houses were the original form of bathroom suites. These houses were usually part of a religious area and it was considered improper to enter an area of worship without bathing. They were public places where multiple people would bath at one time.

Roman baths were very popular and very public. They were more like large, heated pools and became gathering spots for local people. Bathing in public was something that was the norm in those times. They were a strong part of the Roman history and culture that is taught today in history classes.

The invention of sewer systems and toilets lead to further changes in bathroom designs. The public bath houses of the past were moved into individual areas built onto a home. The bath area was usually made of bricks. People were more discreet about bathing since they could do it in their own home.

Bathrooms and bathing were quite popular up to the fall of the Roman Empire. At this time bathroom suites were less popular and people started to be quieter about their bathing habits. Public bath houses were completely wiped out in most places and the idea of public bathing never really caught on in the west.

The first western bathrooms didn't come along until indoor plumbing became popular. Outhouses were used for toilets and bath time was often done in the living room. Once there was a way to supply running water into the home and plumbing to carry out waste, the early bathroom suites were simple rooms that held a toilet and a bath.

The modern idea of the bathroom really took off in the last century. Today a bathroom is an essential part of a home. Many people prefer to have multiple bathrooms and even shower bath suites and half baths in their home. Most people today could never imagine having to bath in public and use the bathrooms of the past.
