The Benefit Of Gifts That Give Back
Gifts that give back goes beyond gift giving
Gifts that give back goes beyond gift giving. It's about giving to someone in need, too.
When people give a gift, they often get back much more in return. This is a truth that many have discovered through the ages, that an attitude of generosity is a cornerstone for a rewarding life. This old adage conveys this simple truth: One can only receive with empty hands. In other words, finding gifts that give back, and giving them without expectation of something in return.
That is not something that comes easily for most people though. Too often, they lose sight of the lessons history teaches about the importance of giving back and how that benefits others. They want to know what they can receive, then how they can find gifts that give back.
History is full of great individuals who built a legacy, not based on what they took, but what they left. People think of Julius Caesar and his military conquests, but few realize the greatness of the Roman Empire was equally due to Caesar's philanthropy. His giving back through public works was the foundation for the true greatness of Rome, because public works is one of the ultimate gifts that give back.
The same is true in this country. One can think of men like John Rockefeller and Andrew Carnegie as tycoons and recognize the tremendous fortunes they accumulated. But they were also benefactors, endowing the arts and creating lasting legacies through foundations and public trusts some very expensive gifts that give back. But those gifts have given back for decades.
Not only that, but these men solved problems and left a world better than the one they entered. One can look back on life before their contributions and can clearly see the real difference they made in the world. This is the principle of gifts that give back making the world a better place, even if it is only a very small part of it.
Despite all of their contributions and advancements in all areas, there still remains an overwhelming need in the world. There is so much need, it is so hard to decide where to give.
But that does not mean that people should give up. Rather, find gifts that give back and make a difference to people in their lives. Most people do not have the kind of money or time as the Rockefellers and Carnegies. Most people do not have the kind of money or time to find gifts that give back like they did. But the world is not changed simply through the Rockefellers and the Carnegies. More often, it is the combined efforts of many who genuinely care.
What if people could give just $5. And they talked to their neighbor about giving $5. If everyone were to give gifts that give back in this way, people can move mountains. If everyone works together to find their own gifts that give back, the impact can be immeasurable.
So life is not about how much we can accumulate. As the old saying goes, "no one ever sees a moving truck behind the hearse at a funeral." Rather life is about how much is given back. The great irony is that the more people give, the more they receive, to the point that when they are gone, their lives will be defined by what they left behind. If one's whole life is spent finding gifts that give back, they may end up changing the world.
It is possible to look back on the Rockefellers and the Carnegies and know they were part of the solution for many problems, through their gifts that give back to their communities and to the country.
