The Benefits Of Exercising In Water
Everyone knows that swimming is definitely great exercise. This is especially true when we don't just get in the water to cool off while splashing around a bit. When we really push our selves, and challenge our fitness level, we can really get a great workout. But there is a lot more we can do as far as exercising is concerned, above and beyond swimming. This watery environment can be extra beneficial for the senior citizen, especially when bone brittleness is a factor, and a very low impact routine is mandatory.
Here is an exercise that will focus on the abdomen muscles. While holding onto the side of the pool, or a flotation device- a couple of those foam "noodles" will work great, flex at the hips and bring your knees up towards your chest. While doing this, tighten your abdominal muscles as you lift your knees. If you want a bigger challenge, try this same exercise while treading water. Keeping your head above water as you pull the knees to the chest repeatedly can really get the heart rate going as the abs get worked. If you twist back and forth, this can be good for the obliques and general the mid-section too. This is "core training" which means all the muscles that connect your mid section to ribs and hips.
Hip exercises are another great part of working out in water. Try this: While standing in the shallow end, grab the side of the pool or again, a flotation device if needed for balance. Now do leg lifts to the front, and then the side, and to the back, lift one leg at a time alternating for about 12 reps each leg.
Most of these exercises can be performed for a 10-20 repetition count. As you finish one exercise,go ahead and tackle the next one after a brief rest. Don't move sooner than you are ready. Just make sure to pace yourself according to your fitness level. Like any other exercise program if you're consistent, you will see gains.
These sessions can start out as briefly as five minutes in length, and as you become more conditioned, you can work up to a n ideal length of time: 20 - 30 minutes. Of course this can also include regular swimming during the different exercises. A couple pool exercise sessions per week should be done especially if you are not doing any other fitness regimen. Because pool exercising is very low impact and therefore very easy on the joints, for most people exercising in the pool every day is just fine. Just alternate which body parts you work on so your muscles will have time to recuperate.
In a round pool do you know what is a lot of fun? Making a whirl pool. Just simply walk against the resistance of the water, and eventually you get a strong current going. this is awesome exercise too. Once you really get it going, try turning around and going the other way. Because it would be difficult to find a youngster who doesn't like to splash around in a pool, if you are a senior, go ahead and take the grand kids along. And here is a potentially life saving tip: if you know a kid who can't swim...Teach them! water exists all over the world we live in, and being able to keep your head above water is a life skill that can prevent an untimely death by drowning. So get your exercise, and do something good for another.
