The Benefits Of Full Spectrum Lighting
Over the course of human history, nature has developed our bodies to respond to its seasonal rhythms and changes
. Even our emotions and the way we behave are connected to the ebbs and flows of these cycles. However, some people are more severely affected by these natural changes and today the culprit is often more the lack of exposure to these changes.
Modern society has created a world that largely separates us from the sources of natural rhythmic flow which we have come to depend on and respond to for thousands of years. We wake up in our enclosed artificial houses, jump into our enclosed artificial transportation and arrive at work to spend the day in yet another enclosed artificial building. With the invention of artificial light, we can go about our business earlier, before the sun rises, and keep on going well past the setting of the sun.
Most of us only experience mild symptoms of these cycles, or the lack of experiencing them, by feeling the "winter blues" or "cabin fever". However, there are many people who react to these stimuli in more severe ways and become deeply depressed or even unable to function in a normal manner.
Science has come a long way in understanding these debilitating effects. SAD, or Seasonal Affective Disorder, is one of the most common conditions which occur because of a lack of natural light. Natural light has a large impact on the pineal gland, which assists in our thermoregulation, intermediary metabolism, immune system, electrolyte metabolism, hemopoiesis and behavior. It's also quite important in producing melatonin, which is a natural sleep aid as well as having other benefits. Melatonin is released by the pineal gland in response to darkness and helps to regulate our cycle of sleeping and waking. It is also believed to be a key player in proper immune function.
Full spectrum lighting has been created to address some of these health issues and, although it is not a sufficient replacement for natural sunlight, it is responsible for aiding in mood enhancement in people who spend a great deal of time living or working in enclosed spaces void of natural light.
Installing full spectrum lighting in the work place can help to lift the spirits of the people touched by it and could raise the health and well-being of the workers. The positive benefits of its affects should show in increased performance and productivity.
Installing full spectrum lighting in the home can help to lift the mood and provide a more regular sleep pattern. The benefits of this could be a happier life consisting of more energy and better health.
