The Benefits Of Having A Home Gym From Stephen W. Carnes
For many people the biggest obstacle toward getting fit is getting to the gym and outside to run or cycle
. Having a home gym can be the greatest advantage for many new exercisers that can't seem to get themselves to their gym or fitness classes. Let's face it; after a long day at the office, once you're home, it's hard to go back out again, and I don't blame you!
A home gym provides all of the necessary equipment without having to worry about parking, packing and showering in a crowded locker room. Stephen W. Carnes' tips on how to set up a simple, affordable and effective home gym:
Buy Free Weights
You can purchase free weights almost anywhere. They are sold in department stores, home improvement stores and of course, sporting good shops. Hand weights cost approximately $1 per pound. They can be purchased very basic, made of iron or with a more comfortable vinyl or foam coating. Surprisingly, the most basic weights are also the most durable but the vinyl and foam will prevent calluses. If this concerns you, a pair of weight lifting gloves will prevent this.
A Stability Ball
Stability balls are great for abdominal training, balance exercises and the best part is that they can be used as a weight bench. Weight benches take up a lot of space and can be quite costly, whereas a stability ball can cost as little as ten dollars. Not to mention that stability balls also offer the advantage of balance training while you are doing that bench press or seated shoulder press. So you will be working your core, in addition to the muscle groups that you are training with weights.
A Jump Rope
Jumping rope is one of the most effective cardiovascular exercises. It raises the heart rate very quickly and strengthens the legs in the process. A jump rope is very affordable and easily stored.
If you have the funding to invest in more sophisticated cardio equipment, a bike or treadmill may cost more initially but these machines are built to last. Many people have their treadmills for more than ten years, and avoiding the outdoors when it's wet or cold makes these machines more than worth it.
Remember, your body weight is one of the best pieces of equipment you have. Body weight exercises are great for strength and cardio. So if you don't have the money for any of these suggestions, fitness goals are still not out of your reach.
A home gym set up can be so simple that the equipment can be hidden under the sofa when it is not in use. Or if you have a room that you use as an office, a home gym works nicely as a way to blow off steam in between conference calls and writing up reports. A home gym will help to avoid all of the inconveniences of a traditional gym setting including other people's sweat and the body building attitude. It provides privacy and not having to share equipment. It is one of the best ways to get in shape on your own terms.
