The Benefits Of Heat Recovery Systems

The move over the last couple of decades to make homes and buildings more energy

efficient has saved millions of dollars on heating bills around the country. However, there can be a downside to this for those living and working in these buildings.

By building more air tight buildings and finding innovative ways of sealing off the drafts in older buildings we have found a way to keep the heat inside instead of escaping outside. However, we have also trapped stale air inside our home along with excess moisture which increases the growth of mildew, fungi, moulds and bacteria, increases the build up of harmful gases from gas water heaters, wood stoves and breathing, and holds in all kinds of odours.

We now have lower heating and cooling costs but more risks to our health than before. That is where heat ventilation and recovery systems are of benefit. Here are just some of the benefits of using a heat recovery system to ventilate buildings:

* It removes the excess moisture from your home, slowing down the growth of harmful bacteria, moulds and mildews.


* It removes the stale air from your home as well some harmful gases and odours, preventing them from building up to dangerous levels.

* It brings fresh clean air into the building, which is far healthier for those working or living inside.

* It uses the heat from the outgoing stale air to warm the incoming fresh air so that your heating bills remain reasonable.

* It filters incoming air to help prevent dust and pollen from entering the building.

How Does a Heat Ventilation Recovery System Work?

In simple terms a heat ventilation system uses two fans, one to drive the stale air out from your home and one to push fresh air into your home. The air travels through tunnels, keeping the fresh and stale air from mixing but allowing the warmth from the stale air to heat the fresh air which keeps the temperature of the building from dropping too much. The heat that can be recovered from the stale air ranges between 60% and 85%, which can make a substantial difference to your heating bills.

While there are a few window or wall mounted heat ventilation recovery units, most are designed to be ducted as whole building systems, providing fresh air to the entire building. These systems are usually set up in crawl spaces where they are out of the way.

Are They Expensive?

While heat recovery systems are not cheap, they usually cost a similar amount to the price of a good central air conditioning unit. The prices do vary depending on who it is purchased from, who installs the unit, the size of the building and other variables. However, the cost of a heat recovery ventilation system will pay for itself over time in terms of energy efficiency savings and healthier employees.
