The ICE provides a number of membership grades, which are all internationally recognised within the sector.

Students can join for free, and only need to begin paying when they upgrade to graduate membership. With further experience, a civil engineer can attain standard, technician or associate membership, while a long and prestigious career will earn you the

opportunity to become a fellow of the ICE.

The Institution of Structural Engineers - otherwise known as IStructE - also offers tiered membership, with similar levels to the ICE. However, IStructE also offer chartered membership, which requires the applicant to complete an IPD training programme, pass a review interview and complete an exam.

Although this might sound like a lot of work, it's certainly worth it. The higher your membership level in either organisation, the more likely you are to succeed when applying for sought-after construction jobs
