Many would say that hankering for English is nothing but a colonial hangover and that we are succumbing to the hegemony of English. But we cannot deny that none of the other foreign languages have been able to reach the level of acceptance that English has reached. No other language to date has been regarded as an international language, bar English.

A research study by the British Council says that English has official status in at least seventy-five countries with a total population of over two billion. More than 750 million people speak English as a foreign language and it is believed that speakers of English as a second language could very soon outnumber those who speak it as a first language.

Let us see the benefits of learning English. Firstly, one can access any sort of information from any place (be it books, media, internet) with the help of English. This is because almost everything gets written down in English. Over a billion web pages are in English. Magazines and newspapers that are in English are the only ones that can be downloaded in any part of the world. Its a good idea to learn English professionally by enrolling in an English school in England or any other place where English is widely used.

When it comes to academia, English is yet again beneficial. Knowing English is extremely important for a successful academic career. Many people know at least two languages. Such people can easily opt for the role of a translator by translating text in their regional languages and vice versa. Almost all the canonical texts have been translated in English. So if you know English you can read almost all the great works in literature. And who wouldnt want to read William Shakespeare, Lord Byron, John Keats, P.B. Shelly or John Milton? The list of names of such stalwarts of English literature would be unending.

Hollywood films are also in English and watching a film by looking at the subtitles takes away half the excitement and fun. In this context also, English is a winner.
