significant amounts and which is why home insulation in the UK is considered so important. Wall and loft insulation are by far the most effective methods of stopping heat escaping from your home. By using modern thermal insulation it is possible to reduce your bill buy up to 265 per year buy fitting both wall and loft insulation. This equates to 1.4 tonnes of CO2 per year!

When you are considering home insulation you should consider how to get the best return for your money. If you have access to your loft and it is not boarded, rolling out loft insulation between the joists is cheap and very effective in fact, most energy companies are offering this service for free. If your loft is boarded you might have to lift the boards to lay the thermal insulation underneath, or in some cases lay the insulation directly on top of the boards. However a typical boarded loft is used as a storage space and will have to be cleared before any insulation is to be fitted if the insulation is going to be fitted on top of the boards then it will not be possible to replace whatever was removed. It is still possible to insulate lofts in these circumstances but a little more cost and thought about how to go about it will be incurred.

Most of the heat in your home escapes through an un-insulated loft about 40% typically but significant amounts of heat is lost through un-insulated walls around 30% of the heat lost. There are two types of wall insulation and these depend on the construction of your house; Cavity wall insulation or solid wall insulation. Newer homes, built after the 1970s, have cavity wall construction, and only recently this cavity has been fitted with insulation at construction. If your home has a cavity wall it is possible to inject thermal insulation into the cavity which will increase the heat retention greatly.

If you home doesnt have cavity walls then it will not be possible to use cavity wall insulation so you will have to consider solid wall insulation. There are two types; external and internal wall insulation. External wall insulation is attached to the outside of your home and is typically slightly more efficient, but it does clad your home and change the appearance which can cause issues gaining planning permission. Internal wall insulation is fitted on the inside of the external walls and is typically much easier to install but it does take up internal space (up to about 10cm).
